This story is told by a girl who has been sexually molested. The illicit activities of a neighbor who is a High School Football jock; went on for years finally advancing into forcible rape. This content may sound harsh. It may even seem too explicit to introduce to a youngster in the inferred age group. As an Author, pediatric and adolescent Psych Unit supervisor, I assure you that it is not. Today in our society with these hidden agendas becoming more prevalent than ever, almost every Newscast in current day propaganda is flooded with the inappropriateness of date-rape, incest, teacher/student relations, and sexual boundary crossing of “trusted adults.”
The experiences of supervising psych units and interacting with hundreds of maimed children, fractured psyches has prompted common rationalizations and resolutions that we must begin to teach our children younger and earlier in age on the privacy and giftedness of their bodies. Let us as parents prepare our children and grandchildren what to look for, when to tell and what to do if faced with these dilemmas. Finally; as an abused child, I know firsthand the character disturbance caused by the violation of personal and physical space. We can heal. We can help. We can teach. But most of all we must be prepared to teach and breach the silence that has kept generations of sexual exploitation “lit” in our families, homes, schools, and communities. I impart this with the greatest love, concern and respect for all children.
